The Senate has cast a unanimous vote to pass a bill to sanction Chinese companies and individuals who benefit from the use of forced labor, particularly from the Xinjiang region where Uyghurs and other ethnic Muslim minorities have been detained in concentration camps and forced to work.

The U.S. declared China’s actions in Xinjiang a “genocide” ([link removed]) earlier this year and enacted the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2020 ([link removed]) a year ago to authorize sanctions along the lines of what the Senate bill would impose.

** Restoring Cubans' Internet

The Communist Party of Cuba moved quickly to cut off the public’s access to the Internet and social media platforms that protesters were using ([link removed]) to communicate amongst themselves and with the rest of the world. That has prompted calls for the U.S. government and American telecommunications companies to restore Internet access to the Cuban people.

In remarks at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Joe Biden was asked about the possibility and answered:

"We are considering whether we have the technological ability to reinstate that access."
