In the 1950s and 60s, our government waged a war on poverty — not on the
poor.

We knew that in the greatest country on earth, no one should be too poor
to survive. And that when we dedicate ourselves to lifting up those who
are suffering, we all rise with that tide.

But in the modern era, things have changed. Donald Trump and other
Republican leaders have shifted that ideal — away from fighting poverty,
and towards fighting the poor. In their minds, it makes more sense to take
food stamps away from struggling families, so they can afford a tax cut
for the rich.
