Dear friend,

Thank you so much for getting in touch with your MP about the debate in parliament on personal debt last week. Over 1500 of us contacted our MPs, which really helped show just how much people care about this issue.

Watch the video below for a summary of the debate 👇

Westminster Hall Debate, 08/07/21. (Rebecca Long Bailey MP shown here)

Ten MPs spoke at the debate, making the point that Covid-19 has made debts for many people soar up in the UK. According to Stepchange, the national advice charity, 11 million people have built up £25 billion of arrears and debt, just to pay for essentials.

This can’t be business as usual; the government has to support people with their debts to help the country recover from the pandemic.

Crucially, the Minister in charge of debt at the Treasury, John Glen MP, was forced to respond. Unfortunately, he did not announce any new measures, but talked about plans the government already has in place.

With furlough due to end this autumn, along with the £20 uplift in universal credit, many are worried about what happens next. Debt can cause huge amounts of stress and is really affecting people in the pandemic.

We'll keep campaigning to make sure the government doesn’t just try to ignore this issue. In the meantime, every MP we contact, every person we talk to about debt and every action we take together can make a difference.

Thank you!

Best wishes
Eva, Zak, Louie and all at JDC
