Ten MPs spoke at the debate, making the point that Covid-19 has made debts for many people soar up in the UK. According to Stepchange, the national advice charity, 11 million people have built up £25 billion of arrears and debt, just to pay for essentials.
This can’t be business as usual; the government has to support people with their debts to help the country recover from the pandemic.
Crucially, the Minister in charge of debt at the Treasury, John Glen MP, was forced to respond. Unfortunately, he did not announce any new measures, but talked about plans the government already has in place.
