National Organization Lauds Deb Butler for Leadership

 


Our District 18 Representative Deb Butler is one of two winners of the national 2019 Tammy Baldwin Breakthrough Award. The LGBTQ Victory Institute bestows the honor each year to an up-and-coming elected official whose promising political career will move equality forward. Deb also received national recognition this year for her defense of democratic values with her spirited protest to a Republican sneak attack in the House of Representatives, responding to attempts to silence her with her battle cry "I will not yield."

The Victory Institute announced that the organization received a record number of votes this year and made the unprecedented decision to name two winners -- Representative Butler and former Peru Congressman Alberto de Belaunde. Deb and Mr. Belaunde will receive the award at the 2019 International LGBTQ Leaders Conference in Washington, DC on November 13 – November 16. The International LGBTQ Leaders Conference is a four-day event that brings together more than 550 LGBTQ elected officials, advocates and leaders from around the world – the largest gathering of its kind.

WRAL Outs GOP Official David Lewis in Sketchy Loan Deal

(From NCDEMs) Last week, a bombshell report from WRAL revealed House Rules Chairman David Lewis borrowed half a million dollars in June 2018 from John Gray, who was indicted in March for actively trying to bribe another state official.

This isn’t the first time Lewis’ sketchy history has caught up to him. First, Rep. Lewis lied to a federal judge and the public when he insisted maps were not pre-drawn. Then, Rep. Lewis lied to House Minority Leader Darren Jackson so the GOP could hold an ambush veto override vote with less than half of lawmakers present. This story solidifies what North Carolina already knows to be true: Lewis is at the epicenter of the corruption and lies that are central values in today’s NC GOP.

Senator Tillis' Weakness More Obvious Every Day

(From NCDEMs) Senator Tillis this week proved he’s too weak and ineffective to deliver much-needed hurricane relief to those recovering from Hurricane Dorian. Tillis and Trump played petty politics as Dorian bore down on North Carolina yet now when North Carolinians need their Senator to deliver for them, he failed. But that's far from the only indication that North Carolina is represented by a Republican Senator with no backbone:


Spineless Senator Thom Tillis again reversed his position on a key policy – this time to support President Trump dangerous decision to abandon U.S. allies in Syria, a move met by a “swift torrent” of criticism. Less than a year ago, Tillis warned against a move to “prematurely withdraw” that “could lead to the resurgence of ISIS and provide a boost to Russia and Iran” – but last week, he abandoned that stance to give “the president the benefit of the doubt.”

Also last week, Senator Tillis doubled down on defending the disastrous ongoing trade war, even as North Carolina farmers warned that they will “pay the price” and are taking “the hit” from the Tillis-backed tariffs. In a heated discussion with AG Secretary Sonny Perdue ahead of National Farmer Day, farmers told Tillis and Perdue that “agriculture is paying the brunt in this” and that the trade war is causing a “considerable higher hit” for North Carolina farmers.

And we should never forget that Tillis stood silent as the President diverted $80 million slated for North Carolina military bases to pay for the border wall Trump claimed Mexico would fund.

Reminder: the County Commission to Hole October 15th Public Hearing On RFP

NHRMS and the New Hanover County Commission announced a public hearing on the Request for Proposal to sell NHRMC on October 15th at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Snipes Academy at 2150 Chestnut Street in Wilmington. The hearing was announced on less than two week's notice.  You can read more about it here.

Party to Appoint Resolution Development Committee

At its August meeting, the New Hanover County Democratic Party adopted a motion calling for resolution development to be handled by a new committee.The resolution development committee will be made up of three members who must each be serving currently as an officer of the county party, a precinct chair, or a precinct vice chair. Those seeking appointment to the committee should contact Chairman Richard Poole at [email protected]. The party plans to make appointments by October 21.

When: Wednesday, October 16, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Judge Brook is seeking election to the seat he now holds on North Carolina Court of Appeals. From 2012 through his appointment to the Court of Appeals by Governor Roy Cooper in April of 2019, Chris was the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina. In 2016, the North Carolina Association of Women Attorneys awarded him with the Gwyneth B. Davis Public Service Award. Chris was also the winner of the North Carolina Justice Center's Defender of Justice Litigation Award in 2017.Tickets for the reception are available here.

"Better Angels" Documentary Screening -- October 23

 

When: Wednesday, October 23, 6:30 p.m. (Registration at 6:00 p.m.)

Where: Hannah Block Historic USO/ Community Arts Center, 120 S. Second Street, Wilmington

 

The Better Angels documentary is a 50 minute film that brings the viewer behind the scenes of real red/blue workshop, illustrating how Americans, with what would be considered polarized political positions, can learn to listen and respect differing views, and in some cases become lasting friends.  Better Angels is a national citizens’ movement to reduce political polarization in the United States by bringing liberals and conservatives together to understand each other beyond stereotypes, forming red/blue community alliances, teaching practical skills for communicating across political differences, and making a strong public argument for depolarization.

 

A public forum will follow the film presentation.

 

Town Hall with NC Attorney General Josh Stein in Hampstead -- October 24 

 

When: Thursday, October 24, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Hampstead Women's Club, 14435 US-17, Hampstead

 


Josh Stein, North Carolina's attorney general will host a town hall meeting at the invitation of the Pender County Democrats. Stein has worked to protect North Carolina consumers from scams and frauds. He and his Consumer Protection Division have helped thousands of consumers get more than $100 million in refunds, saving consumers $250 million on utility rates. Stein has also maintained his commitment to combat the opioid crisis. His office helped draft legislation addressing the crisis and Governor Roy Cooper signed the STOP Act into law on June 29, 2017. Stein recently joined a coalition of state attorneys general who are suing the Trump administration over its rules weakening the 1973 Endangered Species Act.

Democrats Organizing in Neighborhood Groups  (D.O.I.N.G.) Event -- October 26

The Democratic Women of Pender County (DWPC) is hosting a Candidate Forum featuring Terry Van Duyn - running for NC Lt. Governor, Michael Maher - running for NC State Superintendent of Schools, David Sink - running for NC Senate District 8, William Smith - running for Pender County Board of Commissioners, and Dr. Jen Mangrum – running for NC State Superintendent of Schools. This free event will allow the public to have a chance to hear from these candidates followed by a question and answer open forum.
