The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs
Wednesday, July 7, 2021
Dear John,
You are invited to join us on Monday, July 12, for an event focused on
health and health policy on both sides of the US-Mexico border. Register
here.
Shifting Demographics Pose Policy Challenges
Since the 1960s the immigrant population in the United States has
increased fourfold. The changing demographics of the country present
challenges for health policy makers as they adapt to this influx.
In the July issue, Arturo Vargas Bustamante and coauthors examine health
trends and disparities in health care and coverage among US-born
residents and immigrants
.
They write that "health care inequities among immigrants and US-born
residents increased after the Great Recession and later diminished after
the Affordable Care Act took effect." They note, however, unremitting
health disparities among noncitizen immigrants.
Bustamante will join Editor-in-Chief Alan Weil on an upcoming episode of
A Health Podyssey podcast
to discuss this research.
Today on Health Affairs Blog, Senators Chris Murphy (D-CT) and Tammy
Baldwin (D-WI) argue that now is the time to take action on junk
insurance plans
and close the Trump administration loophole that allowed these plans to
flourish.
Jacob Vanhouten and Cynthia Brandt argue that universal patient
identifiers
would improve the accuracy, efficiency, and safety of health care, and a
ban on the use of federal funding to develop them is hampering progress.
Stephanie Teleki writes about the California Health Care Foundation's
investment in development of a new, free e-learning course that
challenges providers to look within themselves to root out implicit
racial bias in maternity care
.
