I’m reaching out because I’m one of the 15 supporters who’ve pledged to
match any donation you make to J Street ahead of this Friday’s midyear
fundraising deadline (yes, we’re real people!).

I’ve made this pledge because I know that the rights of Jewish people in
Israel to enjoy safety, security and self-determination should not and
need not come at the expense of Palestinian rights.

I’ve made this pledge because, like so many of us, I’m tired of political
games around Israel that pit people against each other, shout down those
of us seeking to add compassion and nuance to the debate, and slander
critics of injustice and occupation as “anti-Israel” or “bad Jews.”

I’ve made this pledge because, like you, I want my voice and my values to
be represented in Washington -- and because conservative, establishment
Jewish groups don’t speak for me when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian
debate.

For me, this cause is personal.

As a former diplomat who spent 30 years with the State Department and
another 17 years with the International Crisis Group, I’ve had a front-row
seat to the forces and political debates that shape American diplomatic
leadership -- for better and for worse.

I’ve seen first-hand how important it is to have strong groups like J
Street advocating for principled, values-driven leadership (and pushing
back against corrosive, hawkish groups on the right).

I’ve seen the difference it makes when our leaders know they have the
political support to make impactful, principled decisions -- and I’ve seen
the consequences when they take the easy way out instead.
