Welcome to Monday, June 28th, hills and valleys...

The Dept. of Justice (DOJ) announced Friday that it will file a lawsuit challenging Georgia’s recently enacted election law.

This marks the beginning of the Biden administration’s push against state-level election reforms enacted by Republicans. Georgia was the first 2020 battleground state to pass sweeping legislation to roll back voting rights, despite no evidence of widespread fraud in November's election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland alleged Georgia’s election reforms were done with the intent of denying blacks the right to vote:

“Our complaint alleges that recent changes to Georgia’s election laws were enacted with the purpose of denying or abridging the right of black Georgians to vote on account of their race or color in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act."

Garland continued:

"Several studies show that Georgia experienced record voter turnout and participation rates in the 2020 election cycle. Approximately two-thirds of eligible voters in the state cast a ballot in the November election, just over the national average. This is cause for celebration. But then in March of 2021, Georgia’s legislature passed SB 202. Many of that law’s provisions make it harder for people to vote.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) took to Twitter where he blasted the Biden administration’s decision to use the DOJ to sue Georgia over the election law and expressed confidence the Peach State will prevail after judicial review.

** Hong Kong’s Last Pro-Democracy Newspaper Shuts Down
------------------------------------------------------------

The Apple Daily, Hong Kong’s last major pro-democracy newspaper, will cease operations going forward as a result of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) using its national security law ([link removed]) to stifle the free press.

The closure comes after the CCP arrested Apple Daily’s top three editors and two executives last week, and also seized materials from the newspaper’s office in Hong Kong. Apple Daily said in the aftermath that it would cease operations due to concerns about the safety of its workforce.

The Anniversary Of The Stonewall Riots

On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay-friendly bar in Greenwich Village, New York.

Unlike previous raids on gay hangouts, the patrons of the Stonewall, and residents of Greenwich Village, pushed back.

The uprising became "a key turning point in the struggle for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans," according to the National Park Service, which has designated the Stonewall Inn as a National Historic Landmark.

Happy Pride Month,
