The Anniversary Of The Stonewall Riots
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay-friendly bar in Greenwich Village, New York.
Unlike previous raids on gay hangouts, the patrons of the Stonewall, and residents of Greenwich Village, pushed back.
The uprising became "a key turning point in the struggle for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans," according to the National Park Service, which has designated the Stonewall Inn as a National Historic Landmark.
