What's New In Health Affairs

The July 2021 issue of Health Affairs will focus on borders, immigrants,
and health. In an ahead-of-print paper released this week, Keith Gennuso
and colleagues calculated life expectancy for counties on the US side of
the US-Mexico border. They found large gaps in life expectancy by race
and ethnicity
.
Compared with traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage was associated
with "higher use of preventive care visits, fewer hospital admissions,
fewer emergency department visits, shorter hospital and skilled nursing
facility lengths-of-stay, and lower health care spending."
Antitrust enforcement focuses on provider consolidation because of the
risk of price increases. In a new Considering Health Spending paper
,
Peter Lyu and colleagues found evidence that accountable care
organization (ACO) contracting without a merger or acquisition can still
yield price increases.
June's Narrative Matters essay recounts the stigma and shame one
mother faced after testing positive for COVID-19
shortly before giving birth. Listen to Sara Edmond read her essay on our
Narrative Matters podcast
.
