What's New In Health Affairs
Ahead of Print: Life Expectancy At The US Border

The July 2021 issue of Health Affairs will focus on borders, immigrants, and health. In an ahead-of-print paper released this week, Keith Gennuso and colleagues calculated life expectancy for counties on the US side of the US-Mexico border. They found large gaps in life expectancy by race and ethnicity.

Compared with traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage was associated with "higher use of preventive care visits, fewer hospital admissions, fewer emergency department visits, shorter hospital and skilled nursing facility lengths-of-stay, and lower health care spending."

Antitrust enforcement focuses on provider consolidation because of the risk of price increases. In a new Considering Health Spending paper, Peter Lyu and colleagues found evidence that accountable care organization (ACO) contracting without a merger or acquisition can still yield price increases.

June’s Narrative Matters essay recounts the stigma and shame one mother faced after testing positive for COVID-19 shortly before giving birth. Listen to Sara Edmond read her essay on our Narrative Matters podcast.
