No. But here's what we need to do now.

Given the name of our campaign to fight for essential democracy reform legislation ([link removed]) , you may have asked yourself this week: “Are we fucked yet?”

The short answer is no.

Despite the fact that Republicans would not allow senators to even TALK about legislation protecting voters from voter suppression attacks in states like Georgia, Texas, and more — the fight isn’t over.

Majority Leader Schumer declared on the Senate floor that “failure is not an option” — which is a good sign of commitment to get something done. Joe Manchin’s proposed amendment is progress. So is what we heard from Amy Klobuchar in her conversation with Dan Pfeiffer yesterday ([link removed]) . But there is a lot of work to do.

We need to keep up the pressure on the Senate to make sure that this week’s vote will not be the last time that protecting our democracy comes up for a debate in the Senate.

To build the urgency we need, our friends at Indivisible and over 80 other organizations launched Deadline For Democracy, a cross-movement mobilization plan for the July Recess to demand lawmakers act now to defend democracy and pass the For the People Act by August. ([link removed])

This moment is critical to show massive grassroots support of the For the People Act and eliminating the filibuster to pass it. From now until the August deadline, we need to crank the energy up to 11. YES ELEVEN. OUT OF TEN! If the public isn’t clamoring for something, if the media isn’t covering it, and most of all, if there isn’t a deadline—it’s easy for Congress to move on, which is why from Monday, June 28th to Saturday, July 10th (when your members of Congress are home for recess) there will a mass mobilization all across the country: the Deadline For Democracy.

Tuesday’s vote was not the end of the fight to eliminate the filibuster and protect voting rights – it was just the beginning. But the clock is ticking. If we make our voices heard, and make sure our Senators hear from us and understand that moving on is unacceptable, a pathway to passing essential democracy reform legislation is still possible.
