Weekend Reading
Dear John,
Happy Juneteenth! Today we join people across the U.S. in celebrating the day in 1865 when word finally reached Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished. That was two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
We also reaffirm our commitment to the unfinished struggle of the original abolitionists. We recommit to ending white supremacy and working for a world without prisons or cages—the living legacies of slavery. Read more from AFSC’s Lewis Webb Jr. on what abolitionism means this Juneteenth.
