SATURDAY, JUNE 19, 2021 Weekend Reading Dear John,
Happy Juneteenth! Today we join people across the U.S. in celebrating the day in 1865 when word finally reached Galveston, Texas that slavery had been abolished. That was two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
We also reaffirm our commitment to the unfinished struggle of the original abolitionists. We recommit to ending white supremacy and working for a world without prisons or cages—the living legacies of slavery. Read more from AFSC’s Lewis Webb Jr. on what abolitionism means this Juneteenth. Here are this week's picks to inform and support your activism: Ensuring COVID-19 vaccines for Florida farmworkers: Since May, AFSC’s Florida Program and partners have helped distribute vaccines to hundreds of immigrant farmworkers and their family members in remote agricultural communities.
Join us on June 24: Pillsbury and Occupied East Jerusalem: Did you know there's a Pillsbury factory in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied West Bank? Hear more from Fayrouz Sharqawi of Grassroots Al-Quds and Charlie Pillsbury, a descendant of the Pillsbury founders, who recently announced he and other family members are boycotting Pillsbury products. To learn how you can join our campaign, tune in on Facebook this Thursday, 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
New Mexico preschoolers “give peas a chance”: AFSC New Mexico's annual healthy food campaign brings locally grown produce to schools to get young children excited about eating vegetables—while benefiting local farmers.
Tell Congress: Ensure the economy works for everyone!: As part of his “Build Back Better” agenda, President Biden has proposed investing over $4 trillion into infrastructure, child and elder care, housing, education, and other vital programs. Now Congress must ensure that our tax dollars are used to meet the real needs in our communities and that no one is left behind.
