Welcome to Wednesday, June 16th, laces and velcros...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said if Republicans retake the majority and a SCOTUS vacancy arises in 2024, they would likely block a nominee put forward by a Democratic president as they did in 2016.

McConnell was also asked whether the rule would apply to a SCOTUS nominee picked by a Democratic president in 2023.

“Well, we’d have to wait and see what happens.”

Democratic lawmakers have been lobbying Justice Stephen Breyer, 82, to retire ([link removed]) and allow President Joe Biden to nominate a replacement while his party controls the Senate.

** Americans’ Depression at Lowest Levels of Pandemic
------------------------------------------------------------

A study by the Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that as of late May, Americans’ anxiety and depression levels have reached their lowest point since the pandemic began.

The Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey found that as of May 24th, the percentage of American adults reporting anxiety and depression symptoms had declined to 30% ― the lowest level since May 2020 when the first run of the survey was completed.

This USAFacts chart ([link removed]) shows that the percentage of Americans reporting such symptoms has steadily declined since reaching a peak of 42.6% on November 23, 2020:

** The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
------------------------------------------------------------

Know what's even scarier than water-dragons, krakens, and whatever the #$@$ that thing is in the bottom right corner? The truly mythical amount of trash in our oceans.

Gyres are massive systems of rotating ocean currents (think slow-moving whirlpools) that pull ocean debris into one location—including litter, fishing gear, and other garbage.

This year, the Ocean Voyages Institute wants to remove one million pounds of plastics and ghost nets from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
