And a technique you can use to read between their lines

Dear John,

Breaking News: Debate Backfires

Confrontation is a bad persuasion technique. Even implying that someone is stupid or evil, tends to push that person away from your point of view, not win them to it.

That much might seem obvious - even though it’s hard to tell given how people argue on social media.

But what else doesn’t work?

Arguments, especially arguments that are fact-filled. You’d think data would be persuasive. It usually backfires.
Topic: POLITICAL CONFRONTATION
What purpose does the New York Times have if fact-based arguments backfire?

Our partners at TEN, The Exit Network ([link removed]) , were stunned to find the New York Times sending an email to their newsletter subscribers that said, “Debate is a lousy way to change someone’s mind.” Two things surprised them.

First, TEN explains how the Times isn’t breaking any news here. In their piece, you’ll learn about well-established research that proves and likely even explains why facts actually cause resistance.

Second, the Times is the flagship of the Conflict Machine. That is, they play the lead role in a media that is devoted to a partisan conflict narrative. They use facts to generate debate and provide talking points to partisans in all of their other political coverage. If debate backfires, then what role is there for the New York Times?

The Exit Network article, above, presents the Philosophy of Human Respect. That philosophy is also the subject of our Human Respect Test! Right now...

You can take or retake the Human Respect Test or share it with friends. Typical test duration is 3 minutes. Here's the link. ([link removed])
