Friends -
Over the weekend, a federal judge overturned California’s assault weapons
ban — the first one passed in the nation more than 30 years ago after a
shooting at a Stockton elementary school.
First, don’t worry. The assault weapons ban is still law pending our
state’s appeal to a higher court.
But the truth is, this decision is a direct threat to public safety and
the lives of innocent Californians. Assault weapons like the AR-15 are
weapons of war designed to kill as many people as possible as efficiently
as possible, and they have know purpose on our streets.
That the judge who overturned our assault weapons ban compared the weapon
to a “Swiss Army knife” is a slap in the face to all those who have lost a
loved one to gun violence.
Like I said, we are going to file an appeal to higher court, and I want to
know that you’re with me in this:
[ [link removed] ]Sign my petition: say you support California’s assault weapons ban as a
common sense solution to keep our communities safer from gun violence.
Our state has led the nation in passing gun safety laws, including
protections passed by voters to ban large-capacity magazines and
background checks to keep ammunition out of the hands of dangerous people.
I am proud to have signed multiple bills aiming to reduce gun violence,
including strengthening gun violence restraining orders and.
These bills are THE reason our state has one of the lowest firearm injury
death rates in the country.
The judge’s ruling in this case puts all of that at risk. Now I need you
to make your voice heard:
[ [link removed] ]Sign my petition saying you support Californian’s assault weapons ban
and send an unmistakable message that you support common sense legislation
to keep our communities safer from gun violence.
I am sure you were concerned if and when you read the news over the
weekend, so I wanted to be in touch about what we were doing in response.
Thanks,
Gavin Newsom
