Friends -
Over the weekend, a federal judge overturned California’s assault weapons ban — the first one passed in the nation more than 30 years ago after a shooting at a Stockton elementary school.
First, don’t worry. The assault weapons ban is still law pending our state’s appeal to a higher court.
But the truth is, this decision is a direct threat to public safety and the lives of innocent Californians. Assault weapons like the AR-15 are weapons of war designed to kill as many people as possible as efficiently as possible, and they have know purpose on our streets.
That the judge who overturned our assault weapons ban compared the weapon to a “Swiss Army knife” is a slap in the face to all those who have lost a loved one to gun violence.
Like I said, we are going to file an appeal to higher court, and I want to know that you’re with me in this:
Our state has led the nation in passing gun safety laws, including protections passed by voters to ban large-capacity magazines and background checks to keep ammunition out of the hands of dangerous people.
I am proud to have signed multiple bills aiming to reduce gun violence, including strengthening gun violence restraining orders and.
These bills are THE reason our state has one of the lowest firearm injury death rates in the country.
The judge’s ruling in this case puts all of that at risk. Now I need you to make your voice heard:
I am sure you were concerned if and when you read the news over the weekend, so I wanted to be in touch about what we were doing in response.
Thanks,
Gavin Newsom
