Friend —

With an enormously successful Douglass-Debs Dinner behind us, we are hurtling into October with a ton of momentum. Let’s use it to get two DSA-ers elected to local office in Ferndale! Ferndale for All
Our comrades Nada Daher & Brian Stawowy have completely upended the status quo in Ferndale politics with their inspiring campaigns for Mayor and City Council. They’ve been endorsed by

- Our Revolution (MI),
- Sunrise (Oakland Cty),
- Planned Parenthood (MI), and, of course,
- Metro-Detroit DSA.

Let’s show the developers and the political establishment in Michigan that our Chapter is a force to be reckoned with. Let’s get Brian and Nada elected in Ferndale.

For the next month, we are doing an all-out, chapter-wide blitz in Ferndale to turn out the vote on November 5 for Brian Stawowy for Mayor of Ferndale <[link removed]> and Nada Daher for City Council <[link removed]>. DSA will be knocking doors, making phone calls, and texting every resident of Ferndale to let them know about our amazing platform to take back Ferndale from the developers and create:

- Affordable housing for all
- A Green New Deal for Ferndale
- Sanctuary for all

Nine out of ten people we talk to are receptive to the Ferndale for All platform. At this point, it’s a race against the clock to reach as many Ferndale residents as possible and we need boots on the ground. We can win this thing—but only if we all show up like never before for the campaign.

Can you join us for canvasses this Saturday & Sunday, from 1–3 pm? We’re meeting at 437 College St., Ferndale. Let us know you’re coming or sign up for another day by emailing [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>.

Also consider donating to the campaigns to help Brian and Nada pay for mailers and yard signs: secure.actblue.com/donate/ferndaleforall <[link removed]>

UAW Strike Solidarity
Detroit DSA members have been joining picket lines across the Metro Detroit area since the UAW Strike began last month. Our new Wayne State YDSA chapter has been especially active <[link removed]>. Some good ways to support the strike right now are to keep showing up at picket lines and to drop off donations of non-perishable foods and toiletries at a UAW local near you.

Wednesday, October 9
5 pm

Come to the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly main gate at 2500 E. Grand Blvd. We will be out until about 6:30 pm. We aim to picket at D-Ham every week on Wednesday as long as the strike continues.

Friday, October 11 at GM Tech Center
5–9 am, 3–6 pm

Mass call from UAW workers on strike to come to the Tech Center and hold the line. Wear red. Meet at Van Dyke Road between 12 and 13 mile.

General Meeting
October 12, 10 am–12 pm
Ant Hall, 2320 Caniff, Hamtramck

Join us for our October General Meeting. All are welcome! We pushed the date back due to the Douglass Debs Dinner. These usually take place the first Saturday of the month. Email [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> with any questions.

Socialist Night School
October 16, 6–9 pm
Delite Café, Hamtramck

Back from our summer/early fall hiatus, Socialist Night School is BACK! The topic for the first class is, “Why we’re not progressives—and stand with socialism.” Reading assignment and event details are here <[link removed]>.

Medicare for All Town Hall
Wed. Nov. 6, 6–8 pm
Oakland University, Founders Ballroom C

The Medicare for All Working Group is teaming up with YDSA of OU to bring you a Town Hall right in the middle of Haley Stevens and Elissa Slotkin’s districts, the last two Democratic holdouts in Michigan who have not yet signed onto Rep. Jayapal’s bill for Medicare for All. Save the date!

Thank you!
We had over 300 people come to the Douglass-Debs Dinner last weekend, far exceeding our expectations. We did our best to stretch the food, drink, and good cheer. It was wonderful seeing so many old and new faces.

Solidarity forever!
