Dear Friend,
I first met Rose after she walked 10 miles with her son Evance strapped to her back to save his life. Evance, just 10 years old, was so sick, he was unable to walk. Rose was terrified.
My name is Ellina, and I'm a Project HOPE Engagement Facilitator and community leader in Malawi. I've met many vulnerable, but determined and resilient moms like Rose. They never cease to amaze me, especially as the pandemic has taken such a tremendous toll on women. Thankfully, Evance recovered with care and a new treatment plan.

Like many of the mothers I help, Rose is her family's sole breadwinner. She supports Evance and Catherine on less than $2 a day. That's why I bring them food and make sure to check-in with how Rose is dealing with the stress when I visit. This way I can encourage the kids to stay focused on their studies and continue to attend a Project HOPE-supported teen group where they can get the medications they need.
"I want my children to grow up and become self-reliant," Rose once told me. I'm grateful to help her get the support and health care she needs so Evance can grow up healthy, and Catherine, who dreams of becoming a nurse, can continue her studies.
There are so many people around the world making sacrifices every day for their children. Rose is just one example of the incredible moms, grandmothers, aunts and other women who do whatever it takes to provide for their children and families.
