ongoing series of policy briefs on the social determinants of health
.

What Funders Have Been Supporting

April's GrantWatch column covers how many foundations are supporting
efforts to increase maternal health and prevent maternal mortality.

A number of foundations have been awarding grants to improve maternal
health and prevent maternal mortality. The April 2021 GrantWatch column
,
by Health Affairs' Lee L. Prina, highlights several of those projects.

In the column, Prina describes a sampling of grants from funders
including the Bezos Family Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, the California Health Care Foundation, and more.

Also, the A. James & Alice B. Clark Foundation awarded a large grant to
MedStar Health to address high mortality rates among moms and babies in
Washington, D.C.

Today on Health Affairs Blog, Katie Keith discusses the first 100 days
of Joe Biden's presidency
,
including the signing of the American Rescue Plan Act into law, the
issuing of health care-related executive orders, and the coordination
of a national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Also, David Schleifer and Mary Catherine Beach discuss how assessing and
building clinicians' trust in and respect for patients
,
especially women and people of color, can improve equity and health
outcomes.
