Community Engagement

[6]

Action Drive

Advocacy is one of the core strategies we use to empower young people to
make healthy choices for their bodies and their futures. Through advocacy,
we can shape the way that teens can access the information and the
healthcare they need, creating an enormous potential for change. Advocacy
is a critical component of our work - but in organizations like ours it
largely goes unfunded.

Storytelling Spotlight with Marlen Ramirez

_Each month, the Texas Campaign interviews young adults or the adults who
serve them about their experience with sex education or teen pregnancy. The
impact of these stories helps inform our work across the state._

This month, we interviewed Marlen Ramirez. Marlen is a former teen mother
and has since launched a teen pregnancy prevention program in the border
city of Eagle Pass.

If you are interested in sharing your story, email Alex at
[email protected].

Regional Coalition Meeting

Calling all teen pregnancy or adolescent health coalition members! The
Texas Campaign invites you to join us at our next Regional Coalition
Meeting, scheduled for TUESDAY, MAY 25, 10-11:15 AM CST. The agenda will
include an update on our sex ed implementation efforts and helpful
resources that you can use in your own communities.

These quarterly meetings provide a great opportunity for you to connect
with others doing important work in other parts of the state. We also want
to hear from Coalition members on what type of support you are interested
in and will provide an opportunity for participants to share resources.

ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.

Research & Data

Chart of the Month

The data are clear — Americans are having fewer babies. But those trends
show big variation across age groups. Despite overall population growth,
there were more than half a million fewer births in 2019 than there were in
2007, from 4.3 million babies in 2007 to 3.7 million in 2019. All of that
decrease occurred among mothers younger than age 30, with the biggest
decrease among women age 20-24, followed closely by decreases among teens.
Meanwhile, counts of births increased for all age groups older than 30. As
this chart shows, the nation's striking decrease in teen birth rates is
part of a larger shift of women delaying childbearing. In 2007, 64% of
births in America were to mothers under the age of 30. By 2019, that had
dropped to 52%. If the trend continues, a majority of births in America
soon will be to mothers older than 30.
