We need 5,000 signatures before the House votes? ? ? ? TAKE ACTION NOW: TELL CONGRESS TO MAKE D.C. A STATE
The House is expected to vote as soon as MONDAY on H.R. 51, a bill that would finally make D.C. a state ? the first step to getting over 700,000 D.C. residents the fair representation in Congress they deserve. Before the vote, we need to show a huge wave of support for D.C. statehood from outside the District. Will you help us reach our goal of 5,000 actions today?
Will you sign on now? Congress must hear your voice before the vote ? [link removed] ? SIGN NOW [link removed] ? ? ? ? ? Friend ? We are on the cusp of a major advance for democracy and full representation: H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act, which would grant the District of Columbia statehood, just had hearings in Congress and is expected to be voted on in the House as soon as Monday.
D.C. residents ? predominantly people of color ? currently have NO full voting members of Congress and limited control over decisions that impact their health and environment. It's a system intentionally designed to disenfranchise and limit the power of the Black community and other communities of color ? and we stand with leaders fighting for democratic representation, racial equity, and environmental justice.
The bedrock of our democracy is giving power to the people, and the residents of D.C. deserve that power under the law. We need to make our voices heard, and we're running out of time before the vote. Join the 5,000 LCV supporters demanding that the House vote YES on H.R. 51 for D.C. Statehood ? [link removed]
The past year has underlined how cruel denial of statehood rights has been to D.C. residents. When an angry mob of insurrectionists and white supremacists mounted an attack on the Capitol, D.C. officials lacked the authority to control their own national guard, relying on permission from the same person who had incited the riots. And Congress intentionally used D.C.'s lack of statehood last year to deny its access to full federal COVID funding, despite it having one of the highest concentrations of positive cases.
Furthermore, D.C. residents of color are disproportionately impacted by toxic pollution ? yet don't have the constitutional right to make their voices heard at the federal level when demanding bold climate action. The racist political and economic forces that perpetuate police violence against Black communities and expose communities of color to higher levels of toxic air pollution are one and the same.
Denying D.C. statehood is an example of white supremacy, plain and simple. And we have the power to change it.
We need voices from LCV supporters to be loud and clear: Urge your representative to vote YES on H.R. 51 and give residents of Washington, D.C. equal representation ? [link removed]
The vast majority of D.C. residents demand statehood, and right now we must amplify their voices. Despite living in a city with more residents than states like Vermont or Wyoming, D.C. residents get no say over how the Congress confronts the issues that matter most in their day-to-day lives.
The vote is in mere days, and the clock is ticking. D.C. residents need federal representation and local control now.
We're fighting for a stronger, more equitable nation ? we know we can count on you to join us.
Tell Congress to give D.C. statehood ? [link removed]
