This report presents detailed statistical tables on mortality in state and federal prisons. It provides information on causes of death; decedent characteristics, such as age, gender, and race or ethnicity; and mortality rates of inmate populations compared to the general U.S. adult population.
Findings are based on the Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI) [ [link removed] ] data collection, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program (DCRP).

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a dataset on mortality in state prisons through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The prison component of the MCI data collection collects data on inmate deaths occurring in the 50 state departments of corrections while inmates were in the physical custody of prison officials from 2001 to 2017.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a dataset on mortality in local jails through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. This dataset presents data on inmate deaths occurring in local jail facilities in the United States while inmates were in the physical custody of jail facility officials from 2000 to 2017.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a dataset on jail population statistics through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. This longitudinal dataset includes year-end collections of population and admissions data from all jurisdictions nationwide annually, from 2000 to 2017. These files do not include death data.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a dataset on corrections statistics through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The National Corrections Reporting Program (NCRP) compiles offender-level data on admissions and releases from state and federal prisons and post-confinement community supervision. This dataset contains information on all persons admitted to state prison, released from state prison, or in state prison at year-end from 1991 to 2017 in the United States.
