Findings are based on the Mortality in Correctional Institutions (MCI) data collection, formerly the Deaths in Custody Reporting Program (DCRP).

The Bureau of Justice Statistics has released a dataset on mortality in state prisons through the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data. The prison component of the MCI data collection collects data on inmate deaths occurring in the 50 state departments of corrections while inmates were in the physical custody of prison officials from 2001 to 2017.
