** In Memoriam: Indigenous Human Rights Defenders Murdered in 2020 in Latin America

In 2020, Cultural Survival documented 56 murders, 11 disappearances, and 23 violent attacks against Indigenous human rights and environmental defenders in Latin American countries where we work. ** Murdered in Defense of Life: The Legacy of Ch’orti’ Human Rights Defender Medardo Alonzo Lucero
------------------------------------------------------------
La Cumbre, Chiquimula, Guatemala, community member Medardo Alonzo Lucero was an Indigenous rights and land defender, struggling alongside his fellow community members and those of other communities in active resistance against mining project Cantera Los Manantiales, for which there had been no consultation with the community before initiating operations. In March 2020, the existence of a WhatsApp group entitled “Sierra XXX'' was made public, in which some 100 men from the Sierra Mixe sexualized images of Indigenous Mixe women from Oaxaca in Mexico without their consent.

Munanai is an Indigenous grassroots organization in ||Hui !Gais, which is the original name for Capetown, South Africa. With the help of a grant from Cultural Survival’s Keepers of the Earth Fund, Munanai was able to publish a digital reader ([link removed]) teaching basic phrases in Khoekhoegowab, or Khoikhoi, the language of the Khoe people of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.
