Murdered in Defense of Life: The Legacy of Ch’orti’ Human Rights Defender Medardo Alonzo Lucero
La Cumbre, Chiquimula, Guatemala, community member Medardo Alonzo Lucero was an Indigenous rights and land defender, struggling alongside his fellow community members and those of other communities in active resistance against mining project Cantera Los Manantiales, for which there had been no consultation with the community before initiating operations. On June 15, 2020, Medardo Alonzo Lucero assassinated in the vicinity of the Los Vásquez village in La Cumbre. Read more. En español.

Andrea Carmen (Yaqui), Executive Director of the International Indian Treaty Council, has been involved with the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues since its beginning, and in this radio program, she tells us all about the history of the forum, the present state of the forum, and the forum's future.
The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues was established on July 28, 2000, by resolution 2000/22, with the mandate to deal with Indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health, and human rights. Cultural Survival recently spoke to Kenneth Deer (Mohawk) about the history and work of the Permanent Forum today.

Munanai Publishes Khoekhoegowab Language Reader in South Africa
Munanai is an Indigenous grassroots organization in ||Hui !Gais, which is the original name for Capetown, South Africa. With the help of a grant from Cultural Survival’s Keepers of the Earth Fund, Munanai was able to publish a digital reader teaching basic phrases in Khoekhoegowab, or Khoikhoi, the language of the Khoe people of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.
