Making up for lost time on climate

*********************
Dear Friend,

As we celebrated Earth Day, President Biden re-established U.S. leadership on climate at a global summit, committed the nation to reducing our emissions by 50% by 2030, and promoted his plan to build an equitable, clean energy economy and combat the climate crisis.

If it seems like a lot is going on, that’s because it’s true. The previous administration worked hard to enable polluters to keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere, so we are playing catch up and clawing our way out of that hole. Until now, no administration has treated climate change as the crisis it is, so we need to move quickly and do everything we can to make up for lost time. We’re going to keep pushing the Biden administration to do more – including shutting down the Dakota Access Pipeline – because a livable future depends on it.

The climate, racial justice, and extinction crises compel us to act with conviction, to push onward, and to never rest until we’ve uprooted harmful systems and created a society that reflects our values. We don’t have the luxury of opting out of these fights — which is why we hope you’ll continue your advocacy for people and planet.

Support Green Energy for Puerto Rico

When Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico in 2017, many of its three million residents were without power for nearly a year. Some 3,000 lives were lost — most of the people who died passed away in the aftermath of the Hurricane, while the electric grid was down. It didn’t have to be this way — sustainable and resilient options are available. The Alliance for Renewable Energy Now, a grassroots coalition composed of ten groups in Puerto Rico, is proposing to use the $10 billion that FEMA has allocated to Puerto Rico to make the energy system climate-resilient, safer, and more affordable than the status quo.

Defend the Tongass National Forest

Scientists call the Tongass National Forest in Alaska the “lungs of our country” because it can store close to a billion tons of climate-warming carbon — keeping that carbon from being released into the atmosphere. However, for decades the logging industry has been given a pass to clear-cut the Tongass, turning this ancient forest into a carbon emitter. Tell the Biden administration to defend the Tongass and all our temperate rainforests.

Demand a National Biodiversity Strategy

There’s still time to stop one million of the planet’s plants and animals from vanishing forever. In the early days of his presidency, President Biden issued an Executive Order to tackle the climate crisis at home and abroad and committed the United States to protect 30% of U.S. lands and water by 2030 as part of a broader effort to turn the tide on the rapid loss of nature. Urge the Biden administration to follow through on this commitment and see to it that we establish a National Biodiversity Strategy.
