Dear John,

In my conversations with members of our community, one thing sticks out right now: so many people have loved ones in Iran that they are worried about.

I have heard countless stories of individuals with friends and family who can’t get the medicine they need, or are at risk of contracting COVID-19, or are struggling to put food on the table and just scratch by.

It is tough times for many of us here in the United States amid the pandemic. But in Iran, crushing sanctions are still in place and the normalcy that vaccination may provide seems even further out of reach.

These burdens are taking a toll on many of us. That's why NIAC is continuing to urge President Biden to follow through and ease sanctions on Iran, including humanitarian trade amid the pandemic.

Today, we partnered with Win Without War and the human rights-focused Miaan Group on a letter—signed by 43 partner organizations like J Street, MoveOn and Physicians for Social Responsibility—to urge President Biden to ease sanctions on humanitarian trade with Iran. We are hopeful that the Biden administration will soon complete its ongoing review of how sanctions have impacted the global response to COVID-19, and announce substantive steps for individuals across the globe. Nobody, regardless of where they live or the government they live under, should be inhibited in any way from securing medicine, food and vaccines. In the U.S., we can take steps to ensure that sanctions do not add to the suffering of Iranians in the midst of a pandemic. It is a step that we can, and must, take.

I hope you will continue to support us in this vital effort.

Sincerely,

Jamal Abdi
President, NIAC
