Due to an unfortunate 1997 law, Illinois localities cannot pass much-needed rent stabilization measures. A new bill, HB116, will Lift the Ban on Rent Control, allowing for further legislation that will stabilize communities, decrease evictions and homelessness, and protect working class Illinoisans.

It’s a simple choice between working people and the wealthy real estate lobby. Lifting the Ban is not just sensible housing policy, but a matter of democracy: Chicago voters have overwhelmingly chosen to Lift the Ban in referenda elections, but are bound by this senseless ban. Repealing the ban on rent control would cost the state nothing while allowing cities more options to protect their residents. Rent control stabilizes communities, decreases evictions and homelessness, and does not decrease the quantity of housing. Please stand with the working class and Cosponsor HB116.
