are at an extreme or high risk of gerrymandering this year, threatening
rigged elections for the next decade.

Our Gerrymandering Threat Index, compiled from independent research in
coordination with RepresentUs policy analysts, shows a comprehensive
analysis of the risk of gerrymandering for all 50 states that will redraw
their electoral districts this year.

Alarming takeaways from the report:

* 188 million Americans live in states with an extreme or high risk of
gerrymandering, meaning partisan politicians have huge influence on
how district lines are drawn.
* Only a handful of states currently prevent politicians from rigging
voting districts to favor their political party.
* If we don’t act now to end gerrymandering, voters in 70% of states
will live with the threat of rigged maps.

In 2011, lawmakers used gerrymandering to surgically divide voting
districts and pick their voters, instead of the other way around. It’s a
huge reason that nearly 90% of House races are not competitive, and both
parties are guilty of it.
