Our Gerrymandering Threat Index, compiled from independent research in coordination with RepresentUs policy analysts, shows a comprehensive analysis of the risk of gerrymandering for all 50 states that will redraw their electoral districts this year.

Alarming takeaways from the report:

• 188 million Americans live in states with an extreme or high risk of gerrymandering, meaning partisan politicians have huge influence on how district lines are drawn.
• Only a handful of states currently prevent politicians from rigging voting districts to favor their political party.
• If we don’t act now to end gerrymandering, voters in 70% of states will live with the threat of rigged maps.

In 2011, lawmakers used gerrymandering to surgically divide voting districts and pick their voters, instead of the other way around. It’s a huge reason that nearly 90% of House races are not competitive, and both parties are guilty of it.
