Over 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico currently lack access to representation in Congress and the federal funding that comes with being a state. They don’t even have the right to vote for their president — an injustice that many of us realized for the first time when Donald Trump made insulting Puerto Rico a core piece of his legacy.

Puerto Ricans are Americans, and it’s time we start acting like it. That’s why I introduced the Puerto Rico Admission Act to make Puerto Rico the 51st state in our union. Will you sign on to become a citizen co-sponsor of the Puerto Rico Admission Act? [[link removed]]

The history of our country’s relationship with Puerto Rico is fraught with injustice. Financial loopholes and decades of predatory lending by hedge funds put Puerto Rico $70 billion in debt — and with no relief from the U.S. government, the island was forced to shut down schools, hospitals, and other public services.

Then, in 2017, Hurricane Maria claimed 3,000 lives and devastated the island. But rather than providing the relief folks desperately needed, our former president made a show of tossing rolls of paper towels without providing any real solutions to inequality, poverty, or debt.

Statehood is what a clear majority of Puerto Ricans voted for last November. It would offer over 3 million people the chance to vote for their leaders, access federal funding, relief programs, and other benefits, and give the island’s economy a fighting chance. Not that long ago, it took 50 statehood bills and 64 years for New Mexico to become a state. Our forefathers didn’t give up the fight for equal representation — and we won’t either.
