Hello, Over 3 million Americans in Puerto Rico currently lack access to representation in Congress and the federal funding that comes with being a state. They don’t even have the right to vote for their president — an injustice that many of us realized for the first time when Donald Trump made insulting Puerto Rico a core piece of his legacy.
The history of our country’s relationship with Puerto Rico is fraught with injustice. Financial loopholes and decades of predatory lending by hedge funds put Puerto Rico $70 billion in debt — and with no relief from the U.S. government, the island was forced to shut down schools, hospitals, and other public services. Then, in 2017, Hurricane Maria claimed 3,000 lives and devastated the island. But rather than providing the relief folks desperately needed, our former president made a show of tossing rolls of paper towels without providing any real solutions to inequality, poverty, or debt.
Not that long ago, it took 50 statehood bills and 64 years for New Mexico to become a state. Our forefathers didn’t give up the fight for equal representation — and we won’t either. Thank you for raising your voice, — Martin |
