As Sunrisers, we know our work must always, always be rooted in racial justice and class solidarity. Until the most vulnerable among us are liberated, none of us is.
Eight people were murdered this week in Georgia, including six Asian women. This hate crime—let’s call it what it is—is only the most recent heartbreak of the United States’ long, painful history of violence against Asian Americans. Violence against our communities has especially ramped up during the pandemic because of racist and xenophobic rhetoric around the virus.
As we collectively grieve alongside our friends and family who are holding this loss in their hearts, we must center the needs of those most directly impacted: the victims and their families.
This is what community care is all about. In Georgia, there are some immediate needs for those dealing with the aftermath of this terrorism, including in-language support for mental health, legal, employment, and immigration services.
The Atlanta chapter of Asian Americans Advancing Justice needs your help. They’re calling on all allies in Georgia and across the world to provide for and protect Asian American communities.
