There are some immediate needs for those dealing with the aftermath of this terrorism, including in-language support for mental health, legal, employment, and immigration services.

Dear John,

As Sunrisers, we know our work must always, always be rooted in racial justice and class solidarity. Until the most vulnerable among us are liberated, none of us is.

Eight people were murdered this week in Georgia, including six Asian women. This hate crime—let’s call it what it is—is only the most recent heartbreak of the United States’ long, painful history of violence against Asian Americans. Violence against our communities has especially ramped up during the pandemic because of racist and xenophobic rhetoric around the virus.

As we collectively grieve alongside our friends and family who are holding this loss in their hearts, we must center the needs of those most directly impacted: the victims and their families.

This is what community care is all about. In Georgia, there are some immediate needs for those dealing with the aftermath of this terrorism, including in-language support for mental health, legal, employment, and immigration services.

The Atlanta chapter of Asian Americans Advancing Justice needs your help. They’re calling on all allies in Georgia and across the world to provide for and protect Asian American communities.

They’ve offered up some ways to support:

  1. Sign on to their collective community statement to show solidarity as they develop their community-centered response and denounce the misogyny, white supremacy, and systemic racism that motivates violence against Asian American communities and other communities of color. Click here to sign.
  2. Donate to support those affected. All donations will go directly to support the victims and their families. Click here to contribute.
  3. Share the community-care resources you can offer to the victims and their families, other impacted community members, and community organizations doing crisis response. Some of the resources the community is looking for include mental health services, medical services, immigration legal services, interpretation or translation of Asian languages, victim advocacy and case management, assistance with fundraising, childcare, and/or food assistance. Click here to fill out the form with what you’re able to offer, and don’t forget to share the link widely so others can share what resources they can offer as well.

Thanks for your support,

Virginia
