Outpatient Abdominal Ultrasound Only in Waltham

We are pleased that our Internal Medicine service at Angell West
continues to offer outpatient ultrasound (O/P U/S) appointments
and have added evening drop-off spots on alternating Mondays. Due
to increased caseload in Boston, our Diagnostic Imaging service has
suspended the referral outpatient ultrasound service at our
Boston location.

Clinical News and Insights

Why is Veterinary Anesthesia Important?

Unfortunately, despite the parallels between human and veterinary
medicine, the peri-operative and anesthetic mortality rates remain up
to 100-fold higher in veterinary medicine. Angell veterinary
anesthesiologist Dr. Stephanie Krein examines the potential reasons
why mortality rates are higher in veterinary medicine.

Hearing Loss? Head Shaking? Could it be Primary
Secretory Otitis Media (PSOM)?

PSOM is reported primarily in Cavalier King Charles spaniels. The
primary presenting complaint is gradual hearing loss that can occur
over a 3-8 month period, sometimes concurrently with head shaking/ear
irritation with no evidence of concurrent otitis externa. Dr. Brooke
Simon of Angell's Dermatology service reviews the clinical signs,
diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Current Concepts in Fluid Therapy

Standardized fluid therapy recipes ("one size fits all")
are no longer supported; instead, current recommendations urge that
fluid therapy is detailed for the individual patient, taking into
consideration their clinical illness, needs/deficits, and
comorbidities. The primary goal behind using intravenous fluids is to
maintain or restore intravascular volume, tissue perfusion, and
reverse dehydration. Courtney Peck, DVM, DACVECC provides helpful
information on how to effectively incorporate fluid therapy into our
daily practice.

Veterinary Software Meets Orthopedic Hardware

One of the invaluable secrets behind successful corrective osteotomies
is the use of orthopedic software. No longer "eyeballing" it, today's
veterinary surgeon can combat lameness with extreme precision.

Thankfully, in the world of digital radiology, software programs have
been developed that allow the surgeon to plan, down the millimeter and
degree, exactly where to cut, which implant to use, and to see how the
postoperative radiographic results will look, with nothing more than a
click of a mouse.
