Danny's message: We're lobbying next week to show support for carbon
pricing
Next week, CCL volunteers will head into meetings with hundreds of
members of Congress. Our primary goal in these lobby meetings is to
demonstrate support for carbon pricing so that this essential tool is
included in legislation that Congress will consider this year.
In a new recorded message for volunteers, CCL VP for Government Affairs
Danny Richter said, "We're still not sure that a carbon price will be
included in [President] Biden's climate package at all. Of course, we'd
really like to see that, and so the primary asks are all geared toward
showing as much support for a carbon price, especially fees and taxes,
as we possibly can."
During a special lobby training

earlier this month, Danny reviewed the primary and supporting asks that
volunteers will take into next week's meetings. To help with our
lobbying pitch, one-page handouts — "Carbon Pricing is Popular" and
"Business Statements on Carbon Pricing" — are available on this CCL

Lobbying: This is when liaisons shine
Every year, CCL holds more than a thousand meetings with congressional
offices. How do we manage to get all of these meetings with Congress?
Thanks to our volunteers, of course!
Heading into our March lobbying week, Amy Bennett, CCL's Director of
Congressional Liaisons and Lobby Days, reports we have 501 volunteers
scheduling meetings right now. The vast majority of these appointment
setters are CCL "liaisons" who perform the critical task of developing
and maintaining relationships with House and Senate offices.
The chart above shows the various steps liaisons take to schedule
meetings. Logging these steps, Amy says, is one of the things that sets
CCL apart from other organizations. "The log allows us to catch those
who need help and we reach out to help them." As of Wednesday, 277
meetings are set, about half of all congressional offices, and Amy
expects that number to rise throughout this week and next. "I would be
very happy if we end up with 400 to 425 meetings that happen." Reports
submitted over the next few weeks will give us an accurate count on the
number of meetings held and where things stand in Congress on carbon
pricing. Learn more about the role of our liaisons on CCL Community.

Success with virtual screening: CCL chapters in Virginia organized a
virtual event attended by 300 people. They invited attendees to watch
the climate documentary "Kiss the Ground" on their own and then
participate in a forum to discuss the role agriculture can play in
alleviating climate change. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) was one of
the participants. Read more
