Friend --

Be sure to check out our upcoming General Meeting on March 6th! We've got a guest speaker, a look ahead to the DSA National Convention, plus plenty of campaign updates and proposals to vote on that you won't want to miss.

First, we'll hear from a comrade from Austin DSA about their chapter's successful campaign to defund their police department and reallocate funds to other city services. We'll also get an update from our own Defund the Police Campaign and our Campaigns Committee, plus we'll discuss how you can get involved and what to expect from the upcoming DSA National Convention in August.

We'll also be holding three votes -

1 An election for our Communications Coordinator

2 Our updatedElectoral Bylaws

3 A BBA resolution that includes a chapter statement regarding the North Texas DSA resolution made by the Afrosocialist Caucus

As a nonmember, you won't be able to vote without joining DSA <[link removed]>, but we'd still love for you to come check out the meeting and see what we're up to!

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, March 6th at our new meeting time: 11AM

On March 5, Mayor Duggan will present the Fiscal Year 2022 budget to City Council. It is set to include a $41 million funding increase to Detroit Police Department. There’s no doubt this comes at the expense of other crucial departments like Health, Housing, and Transportation.

We are demanding that council defunds the police and invests in the material conditions of Detroiters by providing alternative crisis response teams likeOregon’s CAHOOTS model <[link removed]>, affordable housing, permanent housing for the unhoused, public health clinics, mass public transit, green union jobs, and more.

We need all hands on deck to pressure Detroit City Council to vote NO in April against any austerity budget that leaves too many low-income and working class Detroiters sick and stuck in the cold. That's why we're hosting phone banks every Friday night to talk to other Detroiters asking them to join the fight and take action before it's too late!

Register below to join us. We'll provide some background and training before making calls followed by a happy hour to debrief.

Waawiyatanong Resists

Sunday, March 7th 7PM-8:30PM

Waawiyatanong Resists honors the long history of resistance to colonialism and oppression by Indigenous people of the Mitchi-Gami region by centering Ojibwe, Odawa and Neshnabek leaders, celebrating their successes and learning from their struggles.

We will also explore the fine line between saviourism and solidarity as we identify opportunities for non-Indigenous allies to take action in support of current areas of Indigenous resistance.
