Since our earliest days on the airwaves, Democracy Now! has reported on global heating and its impact on the planet, covering everything from the 1997 climate summit in Kyoto, Japan to countless climate protests and actions to today's push for the Green New Deal.
This week, we spoke to renowned author and activist Naomi Klein about the severe winter storm that devastated energy and water systems in Texas.
In the wake of the storm, over four million Texans were without power. Around 70 deaths have now been linked to the winter storms in Texas, Tennessee and other states, including at least 12 people who died inside their homes after losing heat.

“The Green New Deal is a plan that could solve so many of Texas’s problems and the problems across the country, and Republicans have absolutely nothing to offer except for more deregulation, more privatization, more austerity,” Klein said.
Help us continue covering the climate crisis, and so much more. M ([link removed]) ake your gift to support Democracy Now! today ([link removed]) . ([link removed])

We also interviewed Texas resident Akilah Scott-Amos. She was one of the lucky ones. Her electricity stayed on. But then she saw her electricity bill jump to over $11,000 in just a few days. Skyrocketing electric bills are a result of the state’s years-long push to deregulate its energy market.

“I have no problems with paying my fair share. But this is not fair,” asserted Scott-Amos.

As Democracy Now! marks 25 years on the air, we're revisiting some of the best and most impactful moments from our history, including one of the last television interviews given by the visionary Black science-fiction writer Octavia Butler.
Butler was the first Black woman to win Hugo and Nebula awards for science-fiction writing and the first science-fiction writer to receive a MacArthur “genius” fellowship. Her work inspired a new generation of Black science-fiction writers, and she has been called “the Mother of Afrofuturism.”
When asked how she set out to become a science-fiction writer when there were so few examples of Black women working in the genre, Butler said she never doubted her abilities.

“I assumed that I could do it,” she said. “I wasn’t being brave or even thoughtful. I wanted it.”
Democracy Now! goes beyond the headlines, getting right to the heart of every story. Support our in-depth interviews with the artists, authors, scholars and scientists whose voices you won't hear anywhere else by ([link removed]) ([link removed]) making your donation today. ([link removed])
