We are thrilled to congratulate Ugandan climate justice activist, Vanessa Nakate, on her feature in TIME100 Next 2021. Problems viewing this email? View it in your web browser. [[link removed]] or [[link removed]] Dear friends,

The past year has been an incredible test for American democracy, from the
increase in voter suppression tactics to the deadly January 6 insurrection at
the U.S. Capitol. At every point during this stress test for our democracy,
faith communities played an instrumental role in protecting democratic norms and
reimagining a more inclusive democracy.

We are excited to release a new report [[link removed]] today that profiles the values and work of the pro-democracy faith movement, an
extremely diverse coalition, all united by their religiously or spiritually
driven motivations to see a nation and world in which all people are treated
equally, including with regard to their political representation. We hope the
report will deepen public knowledge of the role that faith-based organizations
played in defending and shaping our democracy over the past year.

The report is rooted in a series of interviews the Center for American Progress
conducted this past summer, in partnership with Auburn Seminary, with 28
pro-democracy religious leaders—scholars, congregational leaders, and
activists—representing diverse religions, races and ethnicities, ages, genders,
sexual orientations, and geographic regions. We synthesized the values that
drive their work for an inclusive democracy where everyone has a vote and a
voice.

Faith communities play an important role in American democracy, and we're
excited that President Joe Biden has committed to engaging with both religious
and secular communities to advance the common good as part of his executive order re-establishing the White House Office of Faith-Based and
Neighborhood Partnerships.
[[link removed]] The structure of the new White House office closely aligns with our recommendations
[[link removed]] for the Biden administration's religious engagement. Our nation will continue
to face a great deal of challenges this year, and partnerships between our
democratic government and civil society will be critical to addressing them.
