Friend --

As the effects of climate change ravage us with a brutal cold snap from here in Michigan all the way down to Texas, we're seeing firsthand why capitalism isn't sustainable. Corporate greed and lack of investment in infrastructure has resulted in rolling blackouts in 14 states and left millions without reliable access to power or safe drinking water.

While people in Texas have simply been told that, "if you have no water, you deal without and think outside of the box to survive" <[link removed]>, we've come up with our own "outside the box" solution to problems like these - socialism, a system that centers the needs of people above all else, and doesn't look after citizens only when there's profit to be made.

On March 5, Mayor Duggan will present the Fiscal Year 2022 budget to City Council. It is set to include a $41 million funding increase to Detroit Police Department. There’s no doubt this comes at the expense of other crucial departments like Health, Housing, and Transportation.

We are demanding that council defunds the police and invests in the material conditions of Detroiters by providing alternative crisis response teams like Oregon’s CAHOOTS model <[link removed]>, affordable housing, permanent housing for the unhoused, public health clinics, mass public transit, green union jobs, and more.

We need all hands on deck to pressure Detroit City Council to vote NO in April against any austerity budget that leaves too many low-income and working class Detroiters sick and stuck in the cold. That's why we're hosting phone banks every Friday night to talk to other Detroiters asking them to join the fight and take action before it's too late!

Register below to join us. We'll provide some background and training before making calls followed by a happy hour to debrief.

Can't make it? Here are some other ways you can take action:

• Email the Budget Office <[link removed]> and your city council member <[link removed]>. Demand that they defund the police and refund Detroiters. Click here <[link removed]> for some talking points.
