McDonald’s Quietly Tests McPlant Burger in Denmark and Sweden
Toward the end of last year, we celebrated the highly-anticipated campaign victory that McDonald’s will offer its first plant-based menu item in 2021 -- news that came not long after CEO Chris Kempczinski said that it’s not a matter of if McDonald’s will offer a plant-based option, but when.
As we anxiously await the arrival of the McPlant stateside, select locations in Denmark and Sweden have already begun testing the first item of a potentially entire plant-based line -- a burger. While it appears ([link removed]) that these test patties are being sourced from Beyond Meat, a McDonald’s exec previously stated ([link removed]) that although the fast-food giant did originally work with Beyond Meat, the “McPlant is crafted exclusively for McDonald’s, by McDonald’s.” So it is currently unclear whether this trial burger will differ from future offerings.
Getting a plant-based item on the menu of a fast-food company as popular as McDonald’s will allow millions of new consumers to try a more compassionate option when they may not have gotten the opportunity to otherwise. Join us in reminding McDonald’s U.S. that we cannot wait to try the new McPlant stateside with a quick comment on social media.
