You don't want to miss this. February 2021 News & Updates Message from Rep. Kristin Boggs This month, the Ohio legislature reconvened to begin our work for the 134th General Assembly. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to devastate families and communities around the world, Ohio House Democrats have ensured that our response to this virus will continue to be a top priority. We are ready to face the challenges ahead and keep striving to meet the needs of our communities. As a reminder, you can follow everything we do in the General Assembly on the Ohio Channel. You can stream committee meetings and session debates. You can also follow bills and read testimony at Legislature.Ohio.Gov. Please reach out if you have questions. For official business my office number is (614) 466-1896 or you can email [email protected]. I work for you. Kristin February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the critical role Black Americans have played in our nation’s history. Rep. Boggs proudly joined newly elected Representative Dontavius Jarrells and Senator Hearcel Craig in their efforts to pass legislation designating Columbus’ Poindexter Village as an official Ohio Historical Site. As one of Columbus’ most historic neighborhoods, Poindexter Village was a thriving oasis of music, art, and culture for so many Black families. Named for James Preston Poindexter, a minister, civil rights advocate and community leader, the Poindexter Village was dedicated in Oct. 1940 by President Franklin Roosevelt as one of the nation’s first public housing projects. Adding Poindexter Village to the Ohio History Connection’s network of historic places will help celebrate Ohio’s Black history by telling the story of our Black communities in the mid-20th century. Trust the Facts The CDC answered common myths vs. facts regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. In Ohio, the effective and safe COVID-19 vaccine continues to be rolled out and we are currently in Phase 1B: Ohioans, age 65 and up. For more information regarding Ohio's vaccine prioritization schedule or vaccine provider locations follow this link. Reminder: even after you receive the COVID-19 vaccine, it is important to continue wearing masks, social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings. Legislation Watch Rep. Boggs is reintroducing the Reagan Tokes Act with Rep. Rick Carfagna. The need for such legislation rose after the tragic 2017 murder of OSU student, Reagan Tokes. This bill will address key shortfalls in Ohio's criminal justice system. Rep. Boggs plans to reintroduce legislation with Rep. Laura Lanese that will eliminate Ohio's marital rape exemption and other sex offense exemptions that currently apply if the victim is the spouse of the offender. February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month. Teen dating violence is an issue that impacts everyone – not just teens – but parents, teachers, friends and communities as well. This month, Ohio House Democrats are raising awareness about teen dating violence and promoting safe, healthy relationships. Last year, there were 109 domestic violence fatalities in Ohio. This General Assembly, Rep. Boggs has been working with Franklin County Coroner, Dr. Ortiz on legislation that will create a Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board tailored to meet each counties needs. This bill's purpose is to prevent domestic violence fatalities and improve our response to domestic violence. Announcement: New Program Available The Franklin County Auditor's office has a new program- Pro Bono Board of Revisions Clinics- being started as a pilot this year. These clinics will connect homeowners with volunteer legal and real estate professionals for advice on their home’s value and how the Board of Revision works. It will also be a gateway to connect owners with appropriate representation if needed. This is targeted to low to moderate income home owners who are interested in challenging the value of their owner occupied property. For more information follow this link. Boggs for Ohio | 222 W.
