On Tuesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced a formal impeachment investigation centering on the apparent efforts of President Donald Trump to use taxpayer-funded foreign assistance appropriated by Congress as leverage to extort the Ukrainian government to attack his political opponent. On Thursday, the whistleblower's report that originally brought Congress' attention to this matter was finally released to the public-the same day that Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire testified before the House and Senate Intelligence committees on his handling of this report. Within this maelstrom of information, it's important not to lose sight of the central issue: The president of the United States is actively engaged in an attack on free and fair elections, and as CAP's Neera Tanden stated <[link removed]>, he has left House Democrats "no choice but to start full-scale impeachment for the sake of our democracy and all that America stands for."
