Defending Our Democracy
Unprecedented events have been unfolding at a staggering pace this week. On Tuesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced a formal impeachment investigation centering on the apparent efforts of President Donald Trump to use taxpayer-funded foreign assistance appropriated by Congress as leverage to extort the Ukrainian government to attack his political opponent. On Thursday, the whistleblower's report that originally brought Congress' attention to this matter was finally released to the public—the same day that Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire testified before the House and Senate Intelligence committees on his handling of this report. Within this maelstrom of information, it's important not to lose sight of the central issue: The president of the United States is actively engaged in an attack on free and fair elections, and as CAP's Neera Tanden stated, he has left House Democrats "no choice but to start full-scale impeachment for the sake of our democracy and all that America stands for." As this tumultuous moment unfolds, stay tuned for CAP's research and up-to-date information. For daily email updates, be sure to sign up for CAP Action Fund's indispensable Progress Report .

Reframing the Immigration Debate
New U.S. citizens gather at a naturalization ceremony
For too long, the debate about immigration in this country has been predicated on a false choice that says we can either honor America's history and traditions as a nation of immigrants or live up to its ideals as a nation of laws by enforcing the current broken system. The United States is both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws—and its immigration system should reflect this reality. CAP's Immigration team started a news tracker to provide continual updates and real-life examples of where the rule of law is being undermined in the current immigration system, as well as policies that would move the country toward a fair, humane, and workable system.
