"Our children were cold and we didn't have any kind of heater or any way to warm them up... My father, who is elderly, was struggling so much that he cried. When we saw him like that, we all started crying."
— Um Abdo, Syrian mother
John: It's been bitter cold in parts of Syria this winter.
Families have been sleeping in leaking tents that simply cannot withstand the rain, wind, and snow. In the northwest, displacement camps were recently flooded, making the situation more dire, especially for children who may have to walk through ice cold puddles without adequate shoes.
Their parents will do everything they can to keep them warm, even if it means sacrificing their own comfort — and health. It's a choice any parent would make... but shouldn't have to.

Um Abdo is one of the Syrian mothers who has had to protect her children from the cold winter while far from home. These conditions feel all too familiar to her and her family — it's how their journey started nearly a year ago. Here's what she recalls:
"When we left our home it was cold and rainy. Our children were cold and we didn't have any kind of heater or any way to warm them up. We were very hungry. My father, who is elderly, was struggling so much that he cried. When we saw him like that, we all started crying."
After fleeing their home and leaving everything behind, Um Abdo and her family are now faced with these dangerous conditions once again. But thanks to the generosity of people like you, John, they are getting the support they need.

With help from IRC programs, Um Abdo is making and selling masks so people can keep themselves safe from COVID-19. "Since I started the mask-making project our conditions got better. The difference is that now I'm able to buy supplies for home, wood for winter... I was able to help my family."
You can make a difference for more families like Um Abdo's this winter and help people affected by humanitarian crises worldwide.
Thank you for helping displaced families this winter and throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Andrea Kost
