At this month's General Meeting <[link removed]>, we'll be joined by Chicago DSA Co-chair Melinda Bunnage to discuss CDSA's recent campaign that got six socialists elected to Chicago's City Council. Prior to running for chair, Melinda helped launch the first chapter wide campaign in CDSA, the Lift the Ban (on Rent Control) campaign.

She is an excellent union organizer, who worked on multiple mass strikes at public sector employers in Chicago, including the 2019 strike in Chicago Public Schools. Most recently, she organized with workers at the University of Illinois Chicago's Hospital, who struck for ten days during the pandemic to demand fair pay, safe working conditions, and respect as essential workers.

Melinda will be talking about their endorsement process, how they organized to get those city council wins, how CDSA is able to continue working with them through the elections once they begin serving in office, and handling accountability for their elected officials.

🌹 ANNOUNCEMENTS 🌹

On January 27, budget office representatives and City Council heard a resounding cry from District 6 residents at their Community Budget Priorities Virtual Forum: DEFUND THE POLICE! REFUND THE PEOPLE!

And there is still time to tell the budget office and city council what YOUR budget priorities are!

On March 5, Mayor Duggan will present the Fiscal Year 2022 budget to City Council. It is set to include a $41 million funding increase to Detroit Police Department. There’s no doubt this comes at the expense of other crucial departments like Health, Housing, and Transportation.

We are demanding that council defunds the police and invests in the the material conditions of Detroiters: by providing alternative crisis response teams like Oregon’s CAHOOTS model <[link removed]>, affordable decent housing, public health clinics, mass public transit, green union jobs, and more.

---

We need all hands on deck to pressure Detroit City Council to vote NO in April against any austerity budget that leaves too many low-income and working class Detroiters sick and stuck in the cold.

• Emailthe Budget Office <mailto:[email protected]>and your city council member <[link removed]>. Demand that they defund the police and refund Detroiters.  Click here for talking points to use .

• Get involved <[link removed]>with Metro Detroit DSA’s Defund the Police campaign.

• Sign <[link removed]>our Action Network Petition.

Landis for BOPC: Weekend of Action

Saturday & Sunday, January 30-31

We're pumped to announce our big kickoff event for the DSA for Landis campaign—a Weekend of Action to canvass and phonebank for petition signatures!

The campaign has been working tirelessly to gather signatures to get BBA Co-chair Landis Spencer <[link removed]> on the ballot in the 6th District for Detroit's civilian oversight committee for the police department, the Board of Police Commissioners. We'll be reaching out to every voter we can in the district, and we need you to come out strong for Landis!

The sooner we gather enough signatures, the sooner the campaign can begin the next steps in getting a socialist voice on the board willing to fight for the working class in Detroit and stand up to a police department that is actively countersuing protestors <[link removed]> and whose budget demands are leaving other public services out to dry.
