I often get asked which social media platforms are the best now
that Twitter and Facebook have revealed their true colors, Parler
was axed (at least for now) by Apple, Google, and Amazon,
WhatsApp and Instagram are owned by Facebook, and apps we thought
we could trust (like MeWe and Signal) were called into question.
I've seen this coming for a long time and it's the biggest
reason I don't post more often than I do. Pinterest blacklisted
me years ago for posting Whole30 recipes because they didn't like
the views on my blog and Facebook is always censoring me, despite
the fact that my posts are true. I once got in a little verbal
joust with a fact-checker from "Science Feedback" and I can tell
you they're a joke. They're merely suppressing speech and views
they don't agree with. There's no "science" to it and I have yet
to see Facebook or their "fact-checkers" recant their positions
when they are, in fact, proven wrong. The problem? We are
dependent on (and for some of us, addicted to) Facebook. For the
past decade we've put our entire world on their platform. We've
spent time building our lists, creating groups and pages, and
contributing -- in essence, forming a connection with the
platform and people on it. We've given them an invitation into
our world in exchange for the ability to use their "service." If
it's not that, then why do we stay? Because we loathe change, and
migrating to a new platform that nobody else is using or uses for
a second but drops off is not worth our time. Facebook is
comfortable and we're slowly settling into the ways of
censorship, even if we don't like it. If you want my opinion, I
would encourage you do what what is most uncomfortable...venture
out and find an alternative platform and ever so slowly (or
quickly) stop supporting the companies who have little regard for
you, your views, or your rights. When Parler comes back, I would
highly recommend that you join it. In the meantime, I'm growing
quite fond of Telegram -- it is an excellent place to build your
community if you want to be able to follow your favorite pages
and join groups. It's much different than Facebook, but I'm not
so sure that's a bad thing at this point considering that the
only thing left to love about Facebook is its familiarity.
