Four years ago, many of us woke up the day after Donald Trump was inaugurated ready to do something. We were sad, angry, and terrified about what a Trump presidency would mean for America.
So we marched. And because we showed up, all across the country, in places no one expected, that day in 2017 became the largest single-day protest in U.S. history and ignited something that helped get us to where we are today.
Some of you have been in this fight for a long time. But for a lot of you, this may be the first time. The first time you showed up to a protest. The first time you ever called Congress. The first time you knocked on doors. The first time you ever donated to a candidate, made calls, sent texts. The first time you joined a campaign, or even ran for office yourself.
Thanks to your work and the work of this community, Democrats gained control of the White House and both houses of Congress for the first time in 10 years ([link removed]) . We got Mitch and have given President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris a fighting chance for real, progressive change.
In his Inaugural Address yesterday, President Biden said:
“It’s time for boldness, for there is so much to do. And, this is certain. We will be judged, you and I, for how we resolve the cascading crises of our era. Will we rise to the occasion? Will we master this rare and difficult hour? Will we meet our obligations and pass along a new and better world for our children? I believe we must and I believe we will. And when we do, we will write the next chapter in the American story.”
The Vote Save America community is now over 500,000 strong. What’s ahead of us now is how we can build on our progress to help write that next chapter in the coming months and years.
This will be the last email you’ll get from us for a bit. The VSA team is taking the time to find out what we need to do to leverage the power of this community. Here are some of the questions we’re going to be working on answers to:
* How can we be the most effective resource for voters in the upcoming 2021 elections?
* What are the first steps we can take to support organizers building capacity in the places that will determine whether Democrats can hold the House and Senate in 2022?
* How can we support the project of democracy reform, whether it’s passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, fighting unfair gerrymandering, or stopping voter suppression?
So stay tuned! As inaugural poet Amanda Gorman said, we are “a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished.”
There is a lot of work to be done, but we’ve seen what happens when we organize and work together to build a better future, “for there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.”
Talk soon,
Vote Save America
